Oral Fixation
Freud argued that our adult personalities are heavily influenced by what happens to us during the first 5 or 6 years of life. I believe Freud would say I was stuck in the oral stage of development. My mother had a tremendous vegetable garden and was a fabulous cook. Growing food and feeding people was the way she gave love. My parents separated when I was very young and times were tough. I was a sensitive child and felt my mother's love through her food. I also recognized how much my father missed my mothers wonderful cooking. Consequently, I am a classically trained chef and spent 15 years working in the Food and Beverage industry. Admittedly I am still stuck trying to get love from food.
